Statement by Senator Sims on the SCOTUS ruling revoking abortion rights
CHICAGO- State Sen. Elgie R. Sims Jr. (D-Chicago) released the following statement after the nation’s highest court was overturned Roe vs. Wade, deprive millions of women across the country of their right to choose:
“Today is a devastating day for our country. Our worst fears are coming true as we witness continued attacks on our fundamental rights, all in an effort to advance a political agenda rooted in fear and opposed to progress. While I am not surprised by the decision, I am speechless at the brazen way in which a fundamental right, the right to make health care decisions, has been stripped from women across our country in support of a political program.
“While the women of Illinois can take comfort in knowing that our state respects their right to choose and has stood by them to protect that right, millions of people across our country do not have the same peace of mind. As a husband, father and community leader, this reality breaks my heart.
“We cannot and will not allow the assault on our fundamental rights to continue. Our very future hangs in the balance. Let’s continue to raise our voices, organize and advocate to turn pain into progress.
“Our fight continues to ensure that women’s rights and all of our fundamental rights are protected.”
