Kanpur: In a major breakthrough, the Crime Branch uncovered a gang of SIM card vendors, who were supplying the SIM card to a gang of cheaters from Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The gang further used the SIM cards to trick gullible people on the phone. Two people were arrested in this connection.
The police recovered a large quantity of pre-activated SIM cards and Aadhaar cards in their possession. “The SIM cards were activated through the Aadhaar card by becoming a fake distributor of Vodafone Idea company. Then these SIMs were made available to scammers at a good price,” the police said.
On November 17, Shanu, a resident of Chakeri who works in the transport sector, received a call from a man who identified himself as a soldier. “The man said he had been transferred. For this, a vehicle is needed to transport the goods. After that he asked Shanu to send Re 1. At first Sanu refused, but he said he has a government account, this process will have to be followed. In return, he assured Shanu that he would receive double the amount of money. When Sanu sent one rupee, two rupees came back. He then asked Shanu to send Rs 500, thereafter a sum of Rs 1000 came back. Then the person asked Shanu to send Rs 5,000 but the money did not come back,” the police said.
After a few days, Shanu received a call again and the caller said there was a problem with the network, this time sending Rs 15,000, now it will come, but, after that, he did not pass no phone call nor the money came.
Later, Shanu approached Chakeri police and filed a complaint about it. Then the case was assigned to the Crime Branch. “When the criminal branch engaged its cyber cell for investigation, it emerged that the phone calls had been made from Unnao Shuklaganj, but the SIM card therein had been activated from Govind Nagar. Thereupon, the Crime branch intensified its investigation and caught two men who had activated the SIM card by becoming a fake distributor of Vodafone Idea Company,” said DCP Crime Salman Taj Patil. He added: “The arrested men have been identified as Harshit Mishra and Abhishek Mishra, residents of Block E Govind Nagar. Both were making fake Aadhaar cards based on fake documents. After that, the SIM card was activated based on this fake Aadhaar card. These activated SIM cards were given to cheaters at preferential rates. These SIM cards have been used in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. »
Police also recovered several Aadhaar cards, 547 activated SIM cards, seven fingerprint devices, 10 mobile phones, two laptops and a printer, DCP added.
